LG to launch G Flex in Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand mid-December, coming to Europe early 2014

LG's G Flex available in Hong Kong, Singapore and Thailand starting December, will head west early 2014
While you're still trying to work out why you need a curved phone, LG's getting ready to sell you one anyway. That's if you live in Hong Kong, Singapore or Thailand at least. The firm's arched G Flex handset is just embarking on its worldwide rollout, with those nations getting first dibs (after it's home debut in Korea that is). Hong Kong will see it land December 13th, while the other two will get it in the following weeks. Still no official word on when it will head west, though a European release is slated for early 2014 (and not December as first hoped).

YTL, Intel to produce 4G laptops

YTL Communications Sdn Bhd has teamed up with Intel Malaysia to roll out 4G laptops and tablet solutions for the education sector in the country.

YTL Group of Companies managing director Tan Sri Francis Yeoh said the collaboration is aimed to equip all primary and secondary government schools across Malaysia with high-speed 4G Internet connectivity.

This programme seeks to deliver a cloud-bases virtual learning platform and high-speed Internet connectivity to 10,000 schools nationwide, he told reporters after the two companies signed a collaborative agreement to accelerate progress in the 1BestariNet Programme.

"At YTL Communications, we believe that access to knowledge via quality Internet connectivity should be readily available to all Malaysians, particularly Malaysia's next generation.

"We've been working to equip more than 10,000 primary and secondary government schools nationwide with high-speed 4G Internet connectivity on our Yes 4G network and the Frog Virtual Learning Environment through 1BestariNet programme," he said.

1BestariNet, introduced by the Education Ministry, is the first programme on this scale aimed at furthering the long-term success of the education transformation goals.

Yeoh said this hardware programme was not the only initiative that Intel provides in support of taking the teaching and learning process to the next level.

"Intel has also been running programmes to support teacher and student development," he added.

Meanwhile, YTL Communications Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Wing K Lee said the company was optimistic to break-even in less than three years on the expansion of its fourth generation (4G) network coverage in the country.

He said the network, which currently covers 85 per cent of the population, will be expanded to Sabah and Sarawak.

"We've over 4,000 base stations currently and planned to establish a few hundred more. We will be launching in Sabah and Sarawak very soon.

"We're confident of breaking even much sooner than later (within three years)," he told reporters on the sidelines after the signing of a memorandum of understanding between YTL Communications and Intel Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur today.

Wing said YTL Communications has about 700,000 subscribers.

In the first quarter of this year, the group's mobile broadband division, which operates the 4G network, saw good growth in its subscriber base that has driven revenue and narrowed the division's losses, he added.-- Bernama
