KUALA LUMPUR: Maybank2u.com is Malaysia's most visited local website, according to a survey conducted by digital measurement and marketing intelligence expert comScore Inc.

The local banking site, which recorded 1.08 million visitors logging on for 29 minutes each as of June this year, ranked 14 on a list of 15 international sites and portals most visited by Malaysians. This puts it behind the Mozilla Organisation which attracted 1.12 million visitors and ahead of Mudah.com.my which had 1.06 million visitors.

"The online channel continues to play a crucial role in our strategy as we strive to provide customers with the best online-banking solutions and technologies to enhance their online experience and increase convenience," says Maybank senior executive vice-president and head of consumer banking Lim Hong Tat.

In contrast, fellow banking site CIMBCLICKS.com.my ranked 13th on the list of 15 most-visited local sites, with about 398,430 visitors spending around 23 minutes on the site.

Meanwhile, social networking sites such as Friendster and Facebook were also popular among Malaysians, ranking fourth and fifth respectively. Friendster had 3.2 million visitors spending 34 minutes on the site as of June while Facebook recorded 3.1 million visitors staying for 33 minutes during the same period. Blogging site Wordpress ranked ninth with 1.4 million visitors.

The list of most-visited local sites is dominated by news portals with thestar.com.my leading the pack at 768,820 visitors logging on for 17 minutes, placing it in fourth place on the list. Other sites on the list, in descending order, are Utusan.com.my, bharian.com.my, Malaysiakini.com and hmetro.com.my which ranked fifth, sixth, seventh and ninth respectively. These sites shared 2.16 million visitors between them. However, visitors stayed longer on these sites, averaging 28 minutes per visit.

The 15th most-visited local site is Maxis.com.my with 364,390 visitors spending an average of 23 minutes on the site.

The survey also found that in June, 9.3 million Malaysians aged 15 years and older accessed the Internet from home and work locations, consuming an average of 1,066 pages of content and spending nearly 14 hours online during the month. The most-visited sites by Malaysian web surfers are Google sites, which recorded 7.9 million visitors.

"As the Internet market in Malaysia continues to grow, so does the amount of time the average Malaysian spends online," says Will Hodgman, comScore executive vice-president for the Asia-Pacific region.

"The growth in the Internet is providing new opportunities for marketers to capture the attention of their audience and new opportunities for businesses to interact with their customers.

“Understanding the demographic composition of these audiences, their online behaviors and other competitive intelligence will enable these businesses to employ effective digital-marketing strategies and to outperform the competition," he adds.
