Najib says sale of Sime Darby stake to China is speculation

KUALA LUMPUR, Sept 11 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak described as speculation reports that Malaysia is offering a 10 per cent stake in Sime Darby Berhad to China.

But he appeared to suggest such a sale was being considered by saying an announcement would eventually be made on the matter.

“Once the decision is made we will announce it, no preempting of decision,” said Najib when asked if Malaysia had made any offer to China.

“At the moment it is pure speculation,” he added.

“Don’t preempt our decision, public companies don’t make statements in advance or on the basis of speculation,” said Najib.

The Malaysian Insider reported recently, quoting government sources, that Najib discussed the plan to offer up to a 10 per cent stake in Sime Darby Berhad to China at a Cabinet meeting.

It was reported that there was strong support for the idea, seen as a move to firm up linkages between Malaysia and the powerhouse economy.

Following the Cabinet meeting, the government informed the Chinese government officially of its intent to offer a stake in Sime Darby Berhad for sale.
